<hr /><b>Can Yoga help me lose weight?</b>
<p>My main concern is that I would like to learn how to meditate properly and get good at it. I became interested in Yoga because I knew it was good for your health and offered other benefits besides just meditation.</p>
<p>I&#039;m not obese or overweight, but I would like<span id="more-141"></span> to lose a little fat around my midsection. Except when I was in track and cross country in high school, I&#039;ve always had horrible flexibility and almost never been able to touch my toes.</p>
<p>Also, I&#039;ve been told by a trainer at a one-time training session and a chiropractor that my back seems to be the very weakest muscle in my lower body, namely my lower back.</p>
<p>Besides losing weight, can you also gain either some muscle mass or at least muscle endurance?</p>

<p><b>Chronic Calf Muscle Strain?</b>
<p>Last year I was told that I have chronic calf strain in my left leg.  This was after a year of testing which included two MRIS, an EMG for nerve damage, an ultrasound to rule out blood clots, blood work to rule out blood clots (apparently I was worried I had one).  I was sent for physical therapy which helped for the time.  Now I find my calf<span id="more-140"></span> killing again.  I have returned going to the gym doing no more than I did at the physical therapy with the exception of yoga.  My muscle aches and pulls sometimes, feeling weak as if there is an ache deep down in the muscle.  I am about thirty pounds overweight but I am currently working to get it down.</p>
<p>Has anyone else ever had a problem of this sort?  I wish it would just stop hurting.  Any suggestions?</p>

<p>Stress can be a drain on mental energy and a health risk if left unchecked. There are prescription medications designed to minimize stress levels, but there are also many techniques that do not require a doctor&#8217;s visit or drugs that can have side effects or a risk of dependency. Natural techniques<span id="more-139"></span> cover the spectrum of lifestyle issues, from what you eat to your activity levels, so there is bound to be several measures you can take right now to cut that stress down in your life. It is easier than you might think and sometimes just involves some simple planning practical thinking to reduce the stress. </p>
<p>Stress of course is a mental issue and just as the mind can create stress, so careful thinking can also help to reduce it. Change the way you think and approach life and you might find fewer situations causing you stress. First set attainable goals, this means avoiding setting yourself up for stress. Be realistic about how much you can do in how much time. Adding a hundred things to your &#8220;to do&#8221; list will only make you feel like a failure when you can only accomplish 5 of the tasks, and cause you to worry about how to fit in the other 95 chores! Prioritize your tasks and conservatively estimate how long each task should take. Don&#8217;t be afraid to enlist the help of others. Too often people create stress by thinking that they are the only ones who can do a job properly. But give up a bit of control and when someone offers a hand, take it! </p>
<p>Tweaking your schedule can also go along way. Fit in a brief walk during a work break and try to schedule significant downtime for the weekend so you are not tired entering a new work week. Take advantage of vacation time and schedule three-day weekends when you are able. Also make sure you have a predictable routine at home and at work, which should help to buffer the effects of stress when tension hits. </p>
<p>But there is more to stress reduction than just thinking your way to relaxation. Physical activity can actually play a significant part in your stress level. Walking or jogging can be great, simple and inexpensive ways to quickly reduce stress. But it is also important to do an activity that you truly enjoy for maximum benefit. That is because the phy<br />

sical activity will release special feel good chemicals in your brain, while blocking stress producing ones and the more enjoyment you experience the more of these beneficial juices will get flowing. But whatever activity you choose make sure to stretch properly beforehand, to loosen up the tension your experiencing and give your muscles a chance to get ready for the activity. </p>
<p>Certain foods can also help in managing stress because of the nutrients or special qualities they contain. Vegetables in general can work wonders and specific veggies like potatoes, kale and turnips can help particularly well. Besides getting your thinking, diet and exercise in check, there are a few other things you can do to lessen stress. First, take at least 10 minutes every day to do something simple that you enjoy. This could be everything from listening to a few tunes to chatting with a friend, but whatever you do, keep it simple and make sure you find time within a day&#8217;s busy schedule for this &#8220;me&#8221; time. Fruits such as tomatoes, pineapples, pomegranates, apples and bananas also include stress minimizing goodness. Other good mood foods include poultry, seafood, and foods rich in B3 or B12. </p>
<p>Now you might try to eat foods that reduce stress, but did you know you could be consuming something that might be contributing stress? Alcohol might seem like a stress-reliever, but it actuality, alcohol and drug use can exacerbate the stress response. Furthermore, prescription drugs can increase stress levels. It might be a surprise but anti-anxiety drugs, like Valium and Xanax can contribute to stress. </p>
<p>Meditation is widely known to relax both the mind and body. But regular practice can actually assist and regulate the body&#8217;s stress response. Just 20 minutes a day can be all it takes to help reduce stress and providing long-lasting health benefits. Some activities to try include deep breathing, which focus on cleansing breaths, progressive muscle relaxation, where muscles are systematically relaxed throughout the body, yoga, T&#8217;ai Chi and deep tissue massage.</p>

<p>Many people want a miracle method of obtaining good health and peace of mind. However, there isn&#8217;t one!</p>
<p>Having said that there are protocols that if followed on a daily basis will give you the best possible chance of having and keeping robust health in all seasons.</p>
<p>1. Physical Movement</p>
<p>Get that body<span id="more-138"></span> moving!
<p>This is SO important. It can help rid the body of unwanted pounds, boost self-esteem, prolong life, and provide greater energy in daily activities.</p>
<p>Use methods and movements that are holistic in nature, emphasising internal and external health, and that promote energy as opposed to sapping it!</p>
<p>Activities such as Yoga and some of the most recent exercise classes (that focus on martial arts movements for example) are great ways to to use your body in a total manner.</p>
<p>Try to avoid isolating each muscle group while training.</p>
<p>Use your body as a unit and feel your energy soar!</p>
<p>2. A Little Each Day</p>
<p>Try and do SOMETHING each day.</p>
<p>No, I&#8217;m not talking about intense sessions each day. Instead stagger intensity levels throughout the week.</p>
<p>It is amazing how many people do NOT do this and simply ruin their bodies!</p>
<p>Some days you might do a little light stretching and meditation, while on another you might perform vigorous deep breathing exercises and a gym session.</p>
<p>The point is this. The body was made to be used and moved. Keep the below quote in mind.</p>
<p>&#8220;It is better to wear out than rust out&#8221;</p>
<p>3. Mix It Up </p>
<p>Don&#8217;t eat the same things each day.</p>
<p>Keep your diet full of brightly coloured fruit and vegetables, lean protein sources, and plenty of carbohydrates if you are exercising regularly.</p>
<p>Do NOT fall into the trap of the fad diets that are prevalent nowadays.</p>
<p>To exclude, for however long, whole (and massively important) parts of a well rounded diet is ludicrous and dangerous.</p>
<p>Try and eat every two to three hours (and eat within the first hour after exercise) and you will be feeling awesome!</p>
<p>4. Positive Thoughts</p>
<p>Try this little test.</p>
<p>Monitor how many times in just three hours you are thinking in a negative fashion. Try this today.</p>
<p>I expect the number of times is higher than it should be.</p>
<p>Yes, it takes effort to be positive! The mind will often take the easy (and non productive) route of spiralling into negativity and procrastination.</p>
<p>It requires effort but is the hallmark of successful people. Take time for yourself each day and be goal focused and forcefully positive!</p>
<p>Even if done for just five minutes each day this will make you a happier, more fullfilled, person.</p>
<p>OK. There they are. Common sense points that can change you for the better fast if applied.</p>
